The police officer that dealt the deadly blow is haunted by his actions and is subjected to a repeating vision of Harry’s ghost in a police cell. He enters the cell and tries to reconcile with excuses, but as the fatal day plays out in ghostly form he realises his wrong-doing, even if he can’t admit it
This short story was created after witnessing two separate incidents on the street the writer lives. The first being the apprehension of a Black man whom politely protested a stop and search on the grounds of racial profiling; he was subsequently tasered. The second was the overhearing of a police officer saying to a (white) man, "If this was America". The author took this to imply, that the officer would use more aggressive tactics if he had the backing of the American policing system.
How many British police officers look to America as a role model for policing? and how often does this influence their police conduct?
